Hello, all! Firstly, I’m back after quite a lengthy hiatus. I’m sorry for such an extraordinarily tardy post! But I do want to make more blog posts from now on. I have been in a strange whirlwind the past few years. I work full-time, but I also have other creative projects that are almost like having three more jobs. It’s taken a toll on me. And then in 2023, my body forced me to rest. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced such a wake-up call in my life!
So, let’s talk about a few things because there is a lot to talk about. We are in February of 2025, in the Chinese Zodiac year of the Snake. And what a time we live in right now! One of the big changes we’ve experienced is in the way that technology has made advances. We even see this influence in the metaphysical and spiritual worlds as they have evolved. With the advent of technology, many things are now readily available. Does this mean that we abandon traditional methods? Or does this mean that we shun anything that is digital? We spend so much time on the internet and just being plugged in, that at first, it is natural to feel aversion to previous methods. However, instead of being either or, maybe we can find a way to bridge the gap between the two.
So, why is my post titled Techno-Witchery Safety? A big reason is that there is a lot of information floating around in the world of cyberspace. Discernment is extremely important. It sounds like an easy thing to do, but in reality, it’s quite the opposite. It can get confusing when much of it sounds legitimate. The second reason is that things can always go wrong when we are online, sharing a screen, or communicating with someone. How can we protect ourselves or our energies the way we would if we were in-person? The application is essentially the same in my experience. I often spray my space with a cleansing herbal mix, or I will use incense (though I’m cautious due to fire hazards as well as sensitivities I have with scents). The next thing I do is create a calming environment. After that, I begin my workings with my craft.
Let’s talk about Techno-Witchery itself. What exactly is it? I admit that when I first heard of the concept, I envisioned tech savvy mages in a neon environment working magic online, sort of like Jinx with her experiments in League of Legends Arcane. Maybe that’s not so far from the truth. Techno-witchery is all about intent, creativity, and using imagery, digital imagery, and even learning online to do certain ritual workings. I count the live streams we may encounter where we watch people who do readings or spiritual work via a webinar. Part of the surge in techno-craft has a lot to do with the way the pandemic forced us to live for a while. We were connected through cyberspace and often found ourselves attending zoom meetings and even going on virtual dates because of the shut-down. So, techno-witchery is in effect making use of digital means and technology where traditional modes may not be available—but it is also at the discretion of the person how they want to use it.
So, how do we stay safe in our space when we are engaged in techno-craft? I find that the rule applies to safety online in general. Protect that space with your own techno spiritual armor! One of the most common issues is privacy. Make sure that nothing you are doing online is not protected in some way or the other, both in terms of browser use and privacy as well as general protection. Believe it or not, I will actually wipe down or dust my laptop and then spray my area with protection spray or sprinkle some salt near my desk. I will keep a protective amulet nearby if needed. Another part of the exercise is similar to what I do when it’s an in-person or traditional effort. I will make sure to ground myself and have an anchor to something to keep my energy where I want it. This anchor could be anything. It could be a statue, a crystal, or a book, or if you’re so inclined, even a nearby person to help with a ritual working. My personal favorite to use is a small drawing I made.
Besides the obvious common-sense modes of taking precautions, one of the major trends in the dangers of cyberspace has to do with the onslaught of information. It is an overload and can get very overwhelming. There are some things that are designed to engage you in ways to provoke you or take up a lot of your time. We never realize how much time we invest in social media or staying plugged in. Being online is synonymous with how we communicate and how we conduct our businesses. We cannot deny that there are merits, but the dangers of cyberspace have always been present. The threat to cybersecurity and privacy is one. But the threat to your mental well-being is another. And while this one is more subtle, it can take its toll on a long-term basis.
This brings me to something rather personal to share. I know that we can ultimately protect our energies and choose what to put our time towards, however, it’s not always as easy as that. I can get sucked in to a click-bait post, much as I am loathe to admit it, and I find myself scrolling endlessly and often mindlessly. It seems like it would be such a simple thing to avoid doing. Yet, there is something tantalizing about scrolling. And then you find yourself exhausted by the end of it. And in today’s climate, mindless doom scrolling and constant news seeking can become detrimental to one’s well-being.
This is where a little self-soothing techno witchery can come in handy! An effective technique is looking at those nature videos or visiting sites promoting peace and joy. I often open on good news sites. It might sound silly or seem obvious, but it wasn’t until I cleansed my space and did just that instead of what I’d normally do that I felt a wave of calm, serene energy wash over me. I found it easier to focus and even write this post! I feel that another part of magick and techno-witchery lies in the form of writing and communicating. Words have always been powerful. Art has always been powerful. Using them in a techno format does not make them any less powerful. Think about your own spell-work. Do you write or type spells? What modes of techno-witchery do you feel works for you?
And on that note, I will conclude this post. If you made it this far, thank you! I’ll end by saying this. I’ll be posting another Tarot blog post soon about how we are in the year of the Hermit, Key #9 of the Major Arcana. That’s right! Revolution Number 9 😊 I will also be posting about the lunar new year, the year of the snake, Lupercalia, and galactic astrology. I’m very excited to share more with you and so happy to be back. Thank you all for your support.
